Actions are just as important in the real world as they are in our minds. Actions are decisions we make that have an impact on our lives. In our minds, the actions we take are our actions. The choices we make, decisions we make, and even what we say are all part of the actions we take in our daily lives.
So when we see the three actions icon and think, “I’m not sure how I’m going to feel about that,” the answer is: a lot. We all make big decisions, we all make small decisions, and we all make what we think is the right decision.
What is this action icon? It’s an icon you see when you’re in the action selection mode on the menu bar. In action selection mode, you can select a series of actions. Every action on the menu bar is shown in a different color. So by default, you’ll see a lot of the actions we normally see, like “home,” “toilet,” “bed,” and “restroom.
Basically it’s a color changer. In action selection mode, the icons switch between normal and iconized actions. The normal actions are ones that are fairly standard for most games, like get up, sit down, and watch TV. The iconized actions are ones that are new, like get up and use the toilet. The iconized actions are ones that are quite specific to a game, like go to the bathroom.
The other thing we can do with these actions is that they don’t have any special effects attached to them, so they don’t look like a big deal, other than they make a lot of sense. For example, when you use a door you don’t just feel a click, but you also feel a door opening. So we can make them feel like a more normal action.
Our favorite example of this is going to the bathroom. The first thing you see when you go to the bathroom in Deathloop is a door opening. Then you see a “clicked” icon which is the actual action that you have in your hand. Then you can go to the bathroom.
We think this is the sort of action we will see a lot more of in the future.
Another example is something you can do when you’re playing an RPG. You can go to a bathroom in Fallout 3, right? You see a door opening, and if you’re not careful you might fall off into the water. This is where we want to move the bathroom action to the right side of the screen in Deathloop.
