We don’t know of a way to earn half a star on PC, but if you’re a new player and you get a mission to complete then you will receive half a star. The gold star on PC is worth up to 5 gold stars, and if you complete the mission twice you will have an additional gold star to give you a free mission.
It doesn’t actually affect the in game currency, but it does provide an incentive to play a mission over and over again.
