The problem with using “qualify” when talking about jobs is that we don’t really mean “skill at” the job. We mean “the job requires or requires skill to do”. The reason, in my opinion, that the job of SQL database administrator is such a rewarding profession is because youre not just trying to find a database to administer. Youre trying to find a database that is the most perfect fit for the kind of database youre trying to administer. As technology changes, so does the type of database you have to administer.

That’s a great point. A lot of people have had to take on jobs that require a lot of technology. In fact, most people Ive met who work in IT don’t have a strong desire to see their jobs change to reflect the changes in technology.

But when it comes to databases, you really do have to look for what type of database works best for you and your company in order to get the job done. Even the very best SQL databases have a high amount of redundancy. In other words, a database with too many tables can take up a lot of space when you’re trying to administer it. That, and it can be very difficult to learn to think in the “right” way about what to do.
